RIP Raul Grijalva (1948-2025)

Representative Raul Grijalva (D-AZ), who had been battling cancer, has passed away at the age of 77.

The long-serving Rep. Grijalva was diagnosed with cancer in April, and had been receiving treatment. In October, he announced he would not seek reelection, and stepped down from his post as Chair of the House Natural Resources Committee in December, endorsing Representative Melanie Stansbury (D-NM) as his replacement.

Rep. Grijalva's official X (formerly Twitter) account posted a statement announcing the Arizona Congressman's passing.

Senator Ruben Gallego: Congressman Grijalva was not just my colleague, but my friend. As another Latino working in public service, I can say from experience that he served as a role model to many young people across the Grand Canyon State. He spent his life as a voice for equality. I am praying for his family during this time of grief, and I hope that that they find comfort knowing his legacy is one that will stand tall for generations.

Representative Andy Biggs: Arizona lost a friend today. Congressman Raúl Grijalva was a dedicated public servant who served his constituents well. Cindy and I are thinking of Raúl’s loved ones and praying for peace and comfort for this time.

Representative Eli Crane: My staff and I are always working hard to deliver wins for the amazing people of #AZ02. I’m truly blessed to have the best district team on Capitol Hill. Here’s a look at our progress over the past two years:

Representative Juan Ciscomani: Arizonans today lost a dedicated public servant. Raul was a fearless champion of the causes he believed in and he never forgot where he came from. While we often disagreed about public policy, he welcomed me into our congressional delegation warmly and always treated me with respect and dignity. Laura and I are praying for his wife Ramona, his 3 children, and all of his family and friends during this difficult time.

Representative David Schweikert: The Congressman was always very kind to me— he had a great sense of humor. As a fellow animal lover, we often found ourselves working together on animal protection issues. To his daughters Adelita, Raquel, and Marisa, and his wife, Ramona, I send my deepest condolences. May @RepRaulGrijalva rest in peace.

Representative Abe Hamadeh: Our thoughts are with the family of @RepRaulGrijalva. He was a man who left an indelible mark on Southern Arizona. May his memory be a blessing.

Representative Yassamin Ansari: I’m devastated to hear of the passing of my colleague Raul Grijalva. He was a fighter for Arizonans and a champion for Indigenous communities and our planet. We will all miss him dearly. My thoughts are with his family, friends, loved ones, and constituents.

Governor Katie Hobbs: I am devastated by the loss of Representative Raúl Grijalva and my heart is with his family and loved ones. To his last day, he remained a servant leader who put everyday people first while in office. I join every Arizonan in mourning his passing.

AZ Attorney General Kris Mayes: AZ lost a giant today. Congressman Raul Grijalva dedicated his life to fighting for the people of Arizona. From standing up for working families, Indigenous communities, and clean air and water — Raul leaves a legacy that is unmatched. I am thinking of his family and loved ones.

State Senator Anthony Kern: Thank you @andybiggs4az for asking the @FBI to investigate the Democrat funding machine ACTBLUE.
