Trump Signs Laken Riley Act Into Law

President Donald Trump (R) has signed the Laken Riley Act into law. The bill immediately deports illegal immigrants who have been arrested for shoplifting, assault against police officers, and crimes that result in death or serious bodily injury.

It also grants states the ability to sue the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) for injunctive relief if "immigration actions such as parole, violation of detention requirements, or other policy failures harm that state or its citizens."

The bill is named in honor of Laken Riley, a University of Georgia student who was brutally murdered by an illegal immigrant in February of 2024. Her killer was sentenced to life in prison without parole in November.

State Senator Priya Sundareshan: Democratic leadership is calling for a thorough investigation into the Isaac School District mismanagement from the Attorney General. Those responsible for jeopardizing our public school students, staff and families must be held to account and punished according to the law.

State Representative Oscar De Los Santos: Earlier today, House & Senate Democratic leadership called for the Attorney General to investigate the gross financial mismanagement of the Isaac School District. Thank you, @AZAGMayes, for taking swift action to protect our public school students & taxpayer dollars.
