Representative Abe Hamadeh (R-AZ) pushed his resolution to ban the display of flags other than the American flag in Congress on social media, earning support from journalist Lara Logan.
Hamadeh's Post and Logan's Response
On X, Rep. Hamadeh posted, "Only American flags should be displayed in the halls of Congress. It shouldn't be controversial. If your Congressman has a foreign or ideological flag displaying outside their office, would you like to know?"
Journalist Lara Logan replied to Rep. Hamadeh's post, writing, "If you are honoring another nation's flag in the halls of Congress, you probably do not belong here."
Previous Context
The Arizona congressman introduced a resolution last February prohibiting foreign and ideological flags from being displayed in the halls of Congress, with exceptions for Armed Forces flags, the national flags of visiting diplomats, State flags for Members of Congress displaying the flag at their official office, and Tribal flags.
"As a former U.S. Army Intelligence officer, I proudly bore the American flag on my sleeve while fighting for the right of my colleagues to wave any flag espousing anti-American ideologies they so choose, however, the halls of Congress should not be littered with silly symbols of their misguided choices," Hamadeh said in his press release at the time.
The resolution was inspired by President Donald Trump's One Flag policy, which similarly banned government buildings, including American embassies, from flying Pride flags, Black Lives Matter flags, and other progressive symbols aside from the POW-MIA flag and wrongful detainees flag.
Later in May 2025, Hamadeh made another push for the resolution during an address at CPAC Hungary, saying, "When I got home from my overseas deployment I no longer recognized America," referring to the displays of ideological flags on Capitol buildings, and reiterated the need to prohibit the practice.
"I am a danger because I speak the truth and don't fit their narrative," he concluded.
