Governor Katie Hobbs and the Arizona Department of Health Services rolled out a new program this week designed to help Arizona residents save money on their prescription medications.

The program, called AZRx, offers a free discount card that any Arizona resident can use to lower prescription costs. The card can save people up to 80% on their medications at no cost.

"We are working to make critical and lifesaving medicines more affordable for Arizona families," Governor Hobbs said. "At a time when prescription drug prices are too high, we are giving Arizonans access to lower prices."

The governor encouraged all Arizonans to sign up, adding that she will "continue to fight for the health and wellbeing of Arizonans."

How Does It Work?

Arizona joined ArrayRx, a partnership of states that negotiate lower drug prices together. Connecticut, Nevada, Oregon, and Washington are also part of this program.

The discount card works at over 64,000 pharmacies nationwide, including nearly 1,200 in Arizona. It covers all FDA-approved prescription drugs, some over-the-counter medications, and diabetes supplies.

Anyone living in Arizona can use the discount card, whether they have health insurance or not. There's no age limit or income requirement, just a valid Arizona address. Each family member needs their own card.

The card also helps when insurance won't cover a medication or when the insurance price is too high. People can choose whichever option saves them more money.

AZRx is part of Governor Hobbs' work to lower healthcare costs. Earlier this year, she eliminated $429 million in medical debt for hundreds of thousands of Arizonans.

Healthcare organizations have praised the program. "It's more than a program; it's a lifeline," said Dana Marie Kennedy, Arizona State Director for AARP.
