Governor Katie Hobbs has named the last week of August as "John McCain Democracy Week" in Arizona, honoring the late senator's life of public service in a proclamation.
The special week runs from August 25-31, 2025, celebrating McCain's commitment to democracy and bipartisan leadership.
"His life of service, resilience, and devotion to democracy continues to inspire us to defend freedom and uphold the values we share," Katie Hobbs said.
McCain's Military Background
John McCain was born into a Navy family. Both his grandpa and father were four-star marines. He then became a pilot after following in their footsteps at the Naval Academy.
During the Vietnam War, McCain's plane was shot down over North Vietnam. He spent five years as a prisoner at the Hanoi Hilton prison.
Even though he could have been released early because of his father's high rank, McCain refused to leave before fellow prisoners who had been captured first. He endured years of harsh treatment while staying loyal to his fellow Americans.
McCain later said he didn't truly understand how much he loved America until he lost his freedom for those five years that was informed by his legacy website.
Political Career
After leaving the military, McCain served Arizona in Congress for 40 years. He became known for working with both Republicans and Democrats to pass important laws.
McCain helped improve relations between the U.S. and Vietnam through diplomacy rather than continued conflict.
Throughout his career, he strongly supported veterans and active military members, understanding their sacrifices from his own experience.
Political Values
McCain believed in democracy and freedom around the world. He opposed dictatorships and supported people fighting for their rights in other countries.
He demonstrated that good leadership involves doing what's right, even when it's challenging.

The new McCain Democracy Week will happen every year during the last week of August, close to McCain's August 29 birthday.
