Warren Petersen, the President of the Republican Caucus in the Arizona Senate, has asked the federal government to look into Democratic Senator Analise Ortiz's posts on social media about Immigration and Customs Enforcement activities.
Senator Ortiz, who serves in Phoenix's Latino-majority district, has been expressing disapproval of federal immigration enforcement efforts and posting social media alerts regarding ICE's presence in the Valley.
Information regarding ICE operations at the Phoenix immigration courts, where agents have been holding individuals arriving for obligatory hearings, has been included in her posts.
Senate President Petersen issued a statement condemning Ortiz's actions:

"The comments made by Senator Ortiz are deeply troubling and do not reflect the position of the Arizona State Senate. I spoke with the U.S. Attorney for the District of Arizona and referred this matter to his office to investigate, as it appears she may be in violation of federal law."
Petersen added that Ortiz "would no doubt face significant scrutiny from her colleagues" if the Legislature were currently in session.
Ortiz defended her actions, stating: "I will not be intimidated. I will alert our community to avoid the area when Trump's masked thugs terrorize us all, regardless of citizenship."

She later added: "Trump doesn't respect our laws nor our constitution. My duty is to keep people safe from his unconstitutional and authoritarian actions."
The controversy has drawn responses from both parties:
Karrin Taylor Robson criticized Ortiz's actions as "dangerous and disgraceful," arguing that "ICE agents are working tirelessly to deport violent criminals. You are endangering them and protecting criminals by broadcasting their location."
Representative Yassamin Ansari defended Ortiz, stating: "Arizona Republicans are complicit in Trump's authoritarianism and ICE's unlawful actions."
Jake Hoffman announced plans to file an ethics complaint, arguing that Ortiz is "openly putting the lives of American law enforcement at risk" and "should be expelled from the Arizona legislature."
In response to Hoffman's direct challenge, Ortiz said, "Bring it on, Jake," and clarified her stance by stating that her alerts are intended to shield community members from what she views as excessive enforcement practices that impact both legal residents and illegal immigrants.

In Arizona's immigration-heavy districts, the dispute is highlighting the continuous issues on how to find a balance between community protection, immigration enforcement, and public safety.
The decision to look into Senator Ortiz's social media posts will be made by the U.S. Attorney's office. When the Arizona Senate meets again, Hoffman's expected ethics complaint might result in legislation.
