The U.S. House of Representatives passed a resolution to end the ongoing U.S. war with Iran on Wednesday and Representative Yassamin Ansari (D-AZ) was quick to respond.
"Finally, after months of Democrats offering this measure, the House just passed an official War Powers Resolution to end Trump's chaotic, illegal war in Iran that has already claimed the lives of American service members and innocent civilians," Ansari wrote on X, adding that Congress, not the president, holds the constitutional authority to declare war.
She closed with a direct appeal: "President Trump, end this war now."
Her statement came moments after the House voted 215 to 208 to approve the War Powers Resolution, with four Republicans crossing the aisle to side with Democrats.
Representative Adelita Grijalva (D-AZ) also issued a statement, calling the war illegal and reckless and noting it has already cost taxpayers tens of billions of dollars and claimed the lives of 13 service members.
Grijalva then argued that with families already struggling to afford basic necessities, President Trump has chosen to fund another endless war while driving up costs at home.
"This war has been an absolute failure from the start," she said, adding that after more than three months of conflict, the U.S. is no closer to peace, security, or preventing a nuclear Iran.
The vote marked the most significant congressional pushback yet against President Donald Trump's conduct of the conflict, which began on February 28 with joint U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iran.
Beforehand, Republican leaders had abruptly sent members home two weeks earlier during what appeared to be a scheduled vote.
Now, NPR reported that House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) defended the administration's position ahead of the vote. "Iran declared war on us 47 years ago. They chant 'death to America.' The president is trying to keep the people safe.”
Continued Push to Act
Senate Democrats have so far been unable to push a companion measure through the Republican-controlled chamber, and even if they did, President Trump would still have the authority to veto it.
His administration has also challenged the constitutionality of the War Powers Act itself.
Still, momentum appears to be building. Senate Democrats recently secured a procedural win when several Republicans broke ranks to advance a war powers vote, though a final date has not been set.
More than 90 days into the conflict, frustration is mounting on both sides of the aisle over the absence of a clear exit strategy. Ceasefire talks have stalled, and just hours before Wednesday's vote, U.S. and Iranian forces exchanged strikes in the Persian Gulf.
House Democrats, including Ansari, are now urging the Senate to act.
