Representative Yassamin Ansari (D-AZ) visited El Salvador with Representatives Maxwell Frost (D-FL), Robert Garcia (D-CA), and Maxine Dexter (D-OR) to demand Kilmar Abrego Garcia's return.
Abrego Garcia, originally from El Salvador, is an illegal alien who was living in Maryland when he was deported in mid-March. The Supreme Court issued an order requiring the Trump Administration to "facilitate the return" of Abrego Garcia, but they have refused to do so. El Salvador's President Nayib Bukele also refuses to hand Abrego Garcia back over to the United States.
Senator Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) had recently visited El Salvador on behalf of Abrego Garcia, which earned fierce criticism from Patty Morin, the mother of Rachel Morin, a woman who was raped and murdered in 2023 by an illegal alien.
Does Texas have a constitutional right to defy Supreme Court on protecting its border?
"My parents fled an authoritarian regime in Iran where people were 'disappeared' – I refuse to sit back and watch it happen here, too. Kilmar Abrego Garcia's illegal abduction and President Trump's complete disregard of due process and a unanimous Supreme Court ruling are deeply disturbing. We should all be appalled by this treatment by the United States government," said Rep. Ansari in her press release, adding, "I'm in El Salvador to advocate for the Trump Administration to facilitate his safe return home and make sure Trump's attack on our Constitution and due process stops now. Trump has already threatened to illegally deport 'home-growns' and American citizens. If this can happen to Mr. Abrego Garcia, it can happen to any of us. This is a constitutional crisis."
Recent investigations by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) suggest that Abrego Garcia is a member of the notorious Mara Salvatrucha, better known as MS-13, which was recently branded a terrorist organization by the Trump Administration.
Other unsavory details about Abrego Garcia include supposed involvement in human trafficking in 2022, and a 2021 restraining order filed by his wife, Jennifer Vasquez Sura, for domestic violence.
As a result, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt declared that Abrego Garcia is "never coming back" in a recent appearance on Fox News.
