Representative Abe Hamadeh (R-AZ) discussed his recent visit to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, where President Donald Trump has begun sending some illegal aliens for deportation, in a recent appearance on James Harris's Conservative Circus radio show, saying "the operations are starting."
President Trump first proposed sending 30,000 illegal aliens set for deportation to Guantanamo Bay in late January, which Representative Cory Mills (R-FL) said "is not actually a bad idea. I think this is actually a very smart idea."
Later in February, our sister site, The Floridian, found that several members of Congress, including Representative Carlos Gimenez (R-FL), were set to visit the facility, which occurred during the first week of March.
Rep. Hamadeh spoke with Harris about the experience, saying that "the operations are starting."
"When I was there, they had just informed me that they had deported 150 Venezuelans to Honduras, and then from there, the Venezuelans picked them up from Honduras," Rep. Hamadeh added, noting that the United States military is "working in conjunction with [Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE)] as well."
The Arizona Congressman gave details about the "two basic sections" in which illegal aliens, who are exclusively adult males, are being held.
"One is for lower-threat deportations. Those are people who came into the country illegally. That may have been their only crime, or some possible low-level offenses, like petty crimes, they house them in a separate area, versus the ones who are more high value, high-risk threats, and that one is more [like] a prison, a typical prison that you would think of where we used to house terrorists over there," Hamadeh continued.
Moreover, he expressed interest in how ICE and the military are hoping to keep aliens in their custody at Guantanamo for no more than 48 hours, "but right now, it is about a week that they are going to be able to be there until they are finally removed from all U.S. territories, not just the homeland."
After all, President Trump initially announced that the plan was to remove 30,000 aliens from the United States into Guantanamo.
Hamadeh had previously expressed that "putting 10,000 troops on our border is the best use of our military" in a February appearance on the Jeff Oravits Show.
