House Republicans remain furious over the conviction of former President Donald Trump on all charges in his New York trial at the end of May, with calls for action in response. Representative Andy Biggs (R-AZ) called for the most direct action in a recent op-ed for the Daily Caller of defunding the office of prosecutor Alvin Bragg, saying, "Congress must use the purse strings to bring this out-of-control weaponized government under control, ASAP."
Rep. Biggs began by emphasizing that nobody on the left, whether in Congress, the media, or the White House, does not want to see Trump behind bars, as none "can speak a sentence without saying the name, "Trump." President Trump lives in their heads. He owns them."
Notoriously, Representative Bennie Thompson (D-MS) introduced a bill that would remove the former President's Secret Service detail if convicted, which Rep. Biggs used to demonstrate the extent to which the left seeks to stop Trump from returning to office.
Does Texas have a constitutional right to defy Supreme Court on protecting its border?
"How insane is that? Do you think for a second that someone who wants to expose Trump to physical danger would not be pleased to see President Trump in jail or prison?" the Arizona Congressman asked in his piece.
Moreover, Biggs pointed at Judge Juan Merchan, a known Biden donor, and his daughter Loren, who used the trial's publicity to raise money for Democrats such as Representative Adam Schiff (D-CA).
"This is a judge who destroyed the concept of unanimity in a criminal verdict and whose jury instructions were a congeries of confusion designed to convict. You know he has a personal animus and political antipathy toward Trump," Biggs continued.
Finally, he pointed to District Attorney Alvin Bragg, "who ran on the platform of prosecuting Trump, and who could not then or now describe what criminal offenses President Trump committed."
"The media is corrupt. The judge is corrupt. The prosecutor is corrupt. Deranged Members of Congress want to expose him to radical Trump-haters. And the left wants to destroy Trump, his family and his supporters. Congress must use the purse strings to bring this out-of-control weaponized government under control, ASAP. The Speaker should bring the ALVIN Act to the floor for a vote, which would remove federal funds from the woeful Alvin Bragg office," Biggs concluded.
Representative Cory Mills (R-FL) similarly called for Republicans to "play offense" after the verdict, demanding, "We need to stop this absolute weaponization, and we need to get out there and start looking at how our [District Attorneys] and [Attorneys General] can start stepping their roles up."
