Congressman Juan Ciscomani (R-AZ) is projecting confidence ahead of what he expects will be another hard-fought battle to hold onto Arizona's 6th Congressional District, telling one interviewer that recent economic legislation is resonating with voters in ways that could tip the race in his favor.
In an exclusive interview with Cactus Politics publisher Javier Manjarres, Ciscomani pointed to provisions in the Working Families Tax Cuts Act, including eliminations of taxes on tips and overtime pay, as policy wins that are connecting with everyday constituents.
"I was just talking to them this week at a restaurant," he said, suggesting the kitchen-table economic message is gaining traction as the election season heats up.
Ciscomani acknowledged the district will once again be competitive, noting that Democratic outside groups have been running advertisements against him since early last year.
He framed the sustained attack spending as a sign that Democrats view the seat as a top pickup opportunity, while expressing confidence that the pressure would not slow his campaign down.
General Election Acknowledgement
With no primary challenger of his own, Ciscomani said the lack of an internal race gives his team a structural advantage, allowing them to focus resources and organizing efforts ahead of the Arizona primary in late summer.
"This is when people start paying attention," he said, describing the coming months as simply "game time."
On his likely general election opponent, JoAnna Mendoza, Ciscomani wasted no time drawing contrasts. He characterized her as a progressive candidate seeking to position herself as a moderate, citing her endorsement list and what he described as a record of supporting higher taxes and reduced police funding.
Mendoza's campaign has indeed attracted a broad slate of establishment Democratic support. Her endorsements include Senators Ruben Gallego (D-AZ) and Mark Kelly (D-AZ), and Congressman Greg Stanton (D-AZ), a coalition that signals a well-backed challenge to Ciscomani's hold on the swing district.
The race in AZ-06 is expected to rank among the most competitive House contests in the country this fall.
