U.S. Customs and Immigration Enforcement (ICE) conducted search warrants at more than a dozen restaurant locations across the Phoenix area on January 26, resulting in the detention of over 35 individuals.
Homeland Security Investigations conducted the operation at 14 Zipps Sports Grill locations. Authorities arrested individuals on allegations including identity theft, fraudulent documentation, and improper hiring practices.
According to court filings reviewed by Fox 10, federal investigators were alerted in February 2025 about potential employment irregularities at Zipps.
The documents suggest that workers may have provided false identification and Social Security information on their hiring paperwork while incorrectly declaring their citizenship status.
State employment records referenced in the case revealed suspicious activity, including one instance where a Social Security number appeared on payroll records for 17 different companies within a 12-month period.
Zipps' Statements
Zipps addressed the situation on January 27.
"Zipps Sports Grill is aware that federal authorities executed court-authorized search warrants at a number of our locations on January 26, as part of an ongoing investigation. Federal officials have not shared details regarding the nature of the investigation, and no charges or allegations have been announced. We are cooperating fully with law enforcement and working closely with our attorneys to understand the scope of the inquiry. Because this is an active matter, we are unable to comment further at this time."
Zipps confirmed that all locations are temporarily closed but expressed hope of reopening within days.
Additionally, Zipps issued a company message acknowledging public protests: "Over the past 24 hours, some individuals have gathered near our locations to demonstrate. We respect the right to peaceful expression and ask that everyone exercise caution and remain respectful of neighboring businesses, employees, and the surrounding community."
Arizona Officials Debate
Cactus Politics recently reported that Governor Katie Hobbs (D-AZ) confirmed her administration is communicating with federal officials regarding the matter.
However, Rep. Andy Biggs (R-AZ) criticized the governor's response, writing: "You vetoed bills that would have improved coordination between local and federal safety officials. Your friend Kris Mayes has openly opined about shooting federal law enforcement agents. You disbanded the Border Strike Task Force. Arizonans deserve better."
With Arizona officials split, federal authorities indicate the investigation remains active, with expectations of increased enforcement operations throughout the Phoenix metropolitan area.
