This week marks the 2nd anniversary of the October 7, 2023, attack when Hamas-led militants launched a surprise attack on southern Israel. The attack began with rocket fire before thousands of militants crossed into Israeli territory. The incident resulted in significant casualties and the abduction of 251 individuals.
The attack led to a larger conflict in the Middle East. Israel has fought with Iran and its allies, including a group in Lebanon called Hezbollah. In June, the United States helped Israel in a 12-day military operation against Iran.
Several U.S. officials issued statements marking the anniversary.
Arizona Representatives
Representative Juan Ciscomani shared on social media, "we mourn the innocent lives taken, pray for the families, and demand every hostage be brought home. America must stand with our ally Israel—and against terrorism and antisemitism—today and always."
Representative Andy Biggs shared, "we mourn with the families of those slain and held hostage. We will not let terrorists win. We pray for peace in the Middle East. Thanks to President Trump's efforts, we are closer to peace than ever before."
National Officials
Secretary Marco Rubio affirmed U.S. support, noting that "@POTUS's 20-Point Plan offers a historic opportunity to close this dark chapter, and to build a foundation for lasting peace and security for all."
President Donald Trump announced positive developments in the negotiations, stating that technical teams will meet on Monday in Egypt to finalize the details. "I am told that the first phase should be completed this week, and I am asking everyone to MOVE FAST," Trump shared, adding that "TIME IS OF THE ESSENCE OR, MASSIVE BLOODSHED WILL FOLLOW."
The ongoing conflict has created domestic challenges within Israel. Many people are protesting every week against Netanyahu's government because the hostages haven't been freed. Israel also has fewer international allies supporting it than in past years as the attacks continue.
