Arizona Senate President Warren Petersen has announced plans to introduce legislation renaming State Route 202 as the "Charlie Kirk Memorial Loop 202," following the assassination of the Turning Point USA founder last week.
According to Warren Petersen's office, Charlie Kirk was assassinated in what officials described as "an act of terrorism." The proposed legislation would rename the central highway loop that circles the eastern and southern portions of the Phoenix metropolitan area, serving millions of daily commuters.
In his statement announcing the proposal, Petersen emphasized Kirk's religious faith and influence on young Americans, commenting that "Kirk lived out his faith boldly, dedicating his life to sharing biblical truth and encouraging millions of young Americans to stand firm in Jesus Christ."
Petersen emphasized the renaming as both a memorial and a call to action, stating it would serve as "a call for each of us to press on in faith, to live courageously for Jesus, and to stand firm in the principles Charlie so boldly championed."
The Opposition
However, the proposal has drawn criticism from people who object to the religious language in the official statement.
Radio Host of KTAR, Barry Markson, responding to the announcement, argued that having an elected official promote legislation with specific religious messaging is "incredibly inappropriate" and described this as "a slap in the face to every Arizonan, regardless of our individual religion."
Barry Markson suggested a hypothetical statement for supporters of the bill, asking whether they would approve if similar language referenced other faiths: "If you like this bill, ask yourself if you'd like it if the language read, 'A call for each of us to press on in faith, to live courageously for Allah and Mohammed.'’
