House Democratic leaders said they will file an ethics complaint against Republican State Representative John Gillette of Kingman after controversial comments he made about Muslims were published this week.
The Arizona Mirror published the comments, which prompted strong reactions from Democratic leadership and responses from Gillette defending his statements.
"We strongly condemn the hateful and dangerous anti-Muslim comments by Representative John Gillette," the Democratic leadership said, calling his comments harmful and against American values.
"Vile and bigoted language like this has no place in public discourse, undermines the safety and dignity of Muslim communities, and promotes fear and division," the statement reads. "We know too well in Arizona that Islamophobic rhetoric can trigger acts of violence and put lives at risk. When used and sanctioned by public officials, it contradicts and weakens the core American values of equality, justice, and religious freedom."
Democratic leadership defended Muslim Americans and their contributions to society.
"Muslim Americans are essential members of our society- serving with distinction in every sector including military service, as first responders, teachers, and small business owners; contributing to our shared prosperity and enriching our cultural and civic life. To target them with hostility or suspicion is both un-American and unacceptable," they concluded.
Gillette's Response
Representative Gillette responded to the criticism on social media. He defended his comments and criticized Democrats for their reaction.
"Can't script this any better. Democrats support Islam and condemn my 'Vile' comments and 1st Amendment Rights on the eve of 9-11," Gillette wrote.
In a statement, Gillette explained his views about Muslim involvement in government. He was responding to a photo showing the executive director of CAIR-AZ, Azza Abuseif, with Governor Katie Hobbs.
"I spoke about this a few months ago. We absolutely do not need a Muslim advisory anything in government. They support Shiria Law. CAIR is a front group for the Muslim brotherhood. Known terrorists organization," Gillette said.
The House Democratic leadership team said they plan to file an ethics complaint against Gillette over his comments.
