Ruben Gallego Wants Iran War Over, Refers to Witkoff and Kushner as 'Tweedle-Dee and Tweedle-Dum'

WASHINGTON—Senator Ruben Gallego (D-AZ) explained his stance on the Iran war and its negotiations in recent comments to Cactus Politics, saying he wants the conflict to end and the United States to be in a better position to do so, but expressed dissatisfaction with the negotiation process, namely with the American negotiators, Special Envoy to the Middle East Steve Witkoff and Special Envoy for Peace Jared Kushner.

"Look, we want to end this as soon as possible," Sen. Gallego said, adding, "We want this to end with the United States being in the most favorable position."

Still, he continued, "I think the President, first of all, should not be sending Tweedle-Dee and Tweedle-Dum to be negotiating for us in Iran right now," mockingly referring to Witkoff and Kushner as the Lewis Carroll characters featured in Disney's 1951 animated film Alice in Wonderland.

"Because at the end of the day, I think the negotiations feel really bad, and could end up putting America in a worse position than before we went to war," Sen. Gallego concluded.

At the beginning of March, the Arizona Senator expressed similar sentiments during an appearance on Fox News's Special Report with Bret Baier, saying, "You always want to root for the best outcome for America, whether it is Trump, whether it was Biden, whoever was in charge."

"I am on Team America, I want to see the best outcome for America, I want to keep America safe," Gallego further clarified, adding, "That also includes making sure that we are very smart about the wars that we go to."

His criticism, therefore, was not rooted in anti-American sentiment or denial of the threat Iran poses, but "it is not that I do not buy it, they [the White House] are not selling it."

In April, Gallego introduced the bipartisan No Oil Profits for Enemies (NOPE) Act, which requires all sanctions against Russia issued under Executive Orders addressing the national emergency continued by the President on April 10, 2025, after President Donald Trump temporarily relieved sanctions on Russian oil to offset rising prices as a result of the continued blockage of the Strait of Hormuz.
