Kris Mayes Highlights Effects of Naloxone Distribution Program

Arizona Attorney General (AG) Kris Mayes highlighted that her office's naloxone distribution program has saved at least 500 lives in a recent statement.

The Context

Naloxone is a drug that reverses an overdose from opioids by targeting receptors. It can be sprayed into the nose or injected into the muscle, skin, or veins of someone suffering from an overdose.

The Arizona state distribution program began in 2023 after AG Mayes helped successfully secure an agreement with the pharmaceutical company Teva to distribute naloxone in lieu of a cash settlement for ten years.

Additionally, the Grand Canyon State would receive approximately $85 million in settlement funds over 13 years, as well as injunctive relief to ban the deceptive marketing practices that perpetuated the opioid epidemic.

Between 2024 and 2025, Teva distributed over 55,000 units of naloxone, which contain two doses each, across 13 Arizona counties and numerous organizations across the state, including the Hopi Nation, schools, healthcare providers, and anti-drug groups.

What Mayes is Saying

"Every unit of naloxone we put into the hands of a first responder, a shelter worker, a healthcare provider, a teacher, or a parent is a chance at saving a life," said AG Mayes in her press release, adding, "At least 500 Arizonans are alive today because we held pharmaceutical companies accountable and used their settlement dollars to fund real, life-saving solutions."

Past Opioid Responses

In June, Mayes distributed a $10 million settlement with opioid manufacturers to the sheriff's offices of Coconino, Mohave, Navajo, Pinal, and Yavapai Counties, specifically toward rehabilitation of addicts who are regularly in and out of jails and prisons.

"The opioid crisis has touched every corner of our state, and breaking the cycle of addiction and incarceration requires real investment in reentry services," Mayes previously said, adding, "These funds will help county sheriffs expand programs that give Arizonans a real shot at recovery, stability, and a second chance."
