Quang Nguyen Calls Out Turning Point's Tyler Bowyer's Racially Charged Comment

What started as a disagreement over endorsements on X turned into something uglier this week, when a Turning Point USA official made a comment widely viewed as racially charged toward Representative Quang Nguyen (R-AZ), and Nguyen responded directly.

It started when Republican Arizona House candidate Ciara Anderson (R-AZ) posted her endorsements on X, including one from state Representative Nguyen. Turning Point USA's Chief Operating Officer Tyler Bowyer jumped into the thread, dismissing Nguyen's endorsement by pointing to the lawmaker's Turning Point Action scorecard, which Bowyer described as one of the worst in the state legislature.

Nguyen pushed back. "Are you still crying over my success at the legislature? My record of success doesn't depend on your fake scorecard. You're a clown," he replied.

Bowyer's next comment drew immediate criticism. "Can you speak English," he wrote back, a remark that many observers, including fellow Republicans, viewed as a reference to Nguyen's Vietnamese heritage rather than the conversation at hand.

Nguyen didn't let it pass. "Better than you speaking any other languages," he shot back, before adding, "Am I detecting a little bit of ugliness? Is that the best you can do?"

Nguyen's Background

The remark carried particular weight given Nguyen's background. He was 12 years old when he fled Vietnam as Saigon fell at the end of the Vietnam War.

Since being elected to the Arizona legislature in 2021, he has built a reputation as a staunchly conservative lawmaker, particularly on gun rights and anti-communist issues. He noted it was not the first time he had faced similar treatment from within his own party's far-right circles.

Bowyer later claimed the comment was simply a reference to a spelling error in Nguyen's tweet. Nguyen acknowledged the typo but raised a straightforward question in response.

"I don't speak English perfectly, and I will admit it," he told Phoenix New Times. "I don't think they had a problem understanding my English, so why even bring that up?"

Nguyen stopped short of condemning Turning Point as an organization but said individuals who act this way need to be held accountable. "When an individual goes rogue like that, they just need to be called out," he said.
