Abe Hamadeh Introduces Bill to Advance PTSD Treatment for Veterans

Representative Abe Hamadeh (R-AZ) has introduced a bill to advance the treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) for our nation's veterans.

What the Bill Does

Specifically, Rep. Hamadeh's Veterans and Servicemembers PTSD Emerging Treatment Review Act requires the Pentagon to compile a report to Congress on emerging clinical research into PTSD and new clinical treatments, including recent trials in Arizona for psilocybin, the psychedelic compound found in certain species of mushrooms.

What Hamadeh is Saying

"Our servicemembers and veterans deserve every opportunity to access the most effective treatments backed by rigorous scientific research," said Rep. Hamadeh in a press release. "Far too many Americans continue to struggle with treatment-resistant PTSD, contributing to suicide, substance abuse, and challenges transitioning back to civilian life. This legislation ensures Congress and the Department of Defense have the data needed to evaluate emerging research and make informed decisions that prioritize military readiness, force health, and veteran care."

Other Veterans' Bills

The Veterans and Servicemembers PTSD Emerging Treatment Review Act is the latest veteran-focused bill that the Arizona congressman has introduced in recent months, following the Military and Veterans Fuel Discount Act introduced near the end of May.

That bill allows the Secretary of War to apply a discount on the 18.4-cents-per-gallon gas tax and additional discounts to counteract state and local gas taxes, effectively allowing military exchanges to apply fuel discounts tied to federal fuel tax rates and additional reductions aimed at offsetting the cost of state and federal fuel taxes.

At the beginning of June, Hamadeh introduced the Medic Education and Deployment into Civilian (MEDIC) Careers Act, which identifies the barriers to recognizing military medical credentials and experience in civilian settings and aligns those requirements with those expected in civilian contexts.

Additionally, the bill expands the availability and accessibility of programs to help veterans transition back into civilian life within the healthcare sector, a field that has been difficult to reenter after service because of differing standards.
