Arizona State University capped an impressive Big 12 softball run by winning the conference tournament, and Representative Andy Biggs (R-AZ) praised the Sun Devils for the achievement.
"Another great moment for Arizona collegiate athletes with the @ASUSoftball ladies bringing home the Big 12 trophy," Rep. Biggs wrote on X. "Congratulations on this remarkable achievement! Lots of hard work paying off for these individuals and coaches."
To understand just how stunning this run was, consider what ASU had to do to get there.
They first knocked off their in-state rival, the University of Arizona Wildcats. Then, they knocked out No. 2 Oklahoma State, walking into the championship game against No. 1 Texas Tech, a team with a 52-6 record that hadn't allowed a single run in their last five tournament games.
Coach Megan Bartlett told ESPN her team was playing loose, relaxed, and "playing with house money."
Texas Tech found out the hard way that's a dangerous way to play.
The Sun Devils blew the game open in the third inning with three home runs in a row. Tanya Windle started it with a solo shot, Emily Schepp followed with a two-run blast, and Katie Chester put the exclamation point on it with another solo homer. Just like that, 4-0, and it wasn't close after that.
Pitcher Kenzie Brown made sure of it. She shut Texas Tech down completely, holding one of the nation's top offenses to just two hits across seven innings while striking out nine batters. The Red Raiders never had a chance.
For Biggs and Sun Devil fans across Arizona, it was the kind of weekend that reminds you why sports are worth watching, because sometimes the underdog doesn't just compete. They dominate.
