Abe Hamadeh Introduces Bipartisan Fuel Discount for Military and Veterans Bill

Representative Abe Hamadeh (R-AZ) has introduced a bipartisan bill to provide a fuel discount to military members and veterans.

Specifically, the Military and Veterans Fuel Discount Act allows the Secretary of War to apply a discount on the 18.4 cents-per-gallon gas tax and additional discounts to counteract state and local gas taxes.

In other words, military exchanges can apply fuel discounts tied to federal fuel tax rates and additional reductions aimed to offset the cost of state and federal fuel taxes.

With fuel prices rising and inflation still prevalent, the military and veterans will be feeling it just as hard as the average American, if not harder.

"As part of my unwavering commitment to America's military heroes and keeping my promise to improve service members' lives, I introduced legislation authorizing a fuel discount at military exchange pumps to lower living costs for our troops, veterans, and dependents," said Rep. Hamadeh in a press release. "Fuel is one of the few products sold by exchanges still subject to tax. This discount, equal to the federal fuel tax, shows profound gratitude to our nation's heroes who have borne the heavy costs of war defending our freedoms. This common-sense step delivers real relief to our selfless service members and their families."

Joining Rep. Hamadeh in cosponsoring the bill are Representatives Don Bacon (R-NE), Don Davis (D-NC), Jimmy Panetta (D-CA), and Eugene Vindman (D-VA).

In March, Senator Mark Kelly (D-AZ) went one step further and introduced a bill to suspend the gas tax altogether until October 1st, 2026.

"Families across Arizona are dealing with high costs on almost everything, and now gas prices are skyrocketing because Donald Trump started a war with Iran," said Sen. Kelly in a press release. "Arizona families shouldn't pay the price for Donald Trump's bad decisions. Suspending the federal gas tax would help bring prices down and give families some much-needed relief."
