President Donald Trump announced this week that Israel and Hamas have agreed to the first phase of a peace plan. The agreement includes a ceasefire and the release of hostages and prisoners.
"I am very proud to announce that Israel and Hamas have both signed off on the first Phase of our Peace Plan," President Donald Trump shared in a Truth Social post.
The White House indicated hostages are expected to be released on Monday. Forty-eight hostages remain to be returned, with Israel stating it believes 20 are still alive.
Under the terms announced, Israel is expected to withdraw troops to an agreed-upon line. President Donald Trump described the following steps, detailing that "this means that ALL of the Hostages will be released very soon, and Israel will withdraw their Troops to an agreed upon line as the first steps toward a Strong, Durable, and Everlasting Peace."
The ceasefire was expected to take effect within 24 hours pending Israeli Cabinet approval.
Trump credited several countries for their role in the negotiations. "We thank the mediators from Qatar, Egypt, and Turkey, who worked with us to make this Historic and Unprecedented Event happen," he credited.
This week marked the two year anniversary of the deadly conflict, resulting in Hamas-led attacks that have led to approximately 1,200 deaths and significant casualties.
According to NBC News, more than 67,000 people have been killed in Gaza since the conflict began. Since then, Gaza has drawn international attention, with reports of food shortages and widespread devastation.
Officials from both parties acknowledged the efforts that led to the agreement.
Senator Mark Kelly expressed appreciation for the negotiations, stating, "after two years, this is a real opening for peace that will release the hostages and get desperately needed aid to civilians in Gaza. There's a lot more work to see this through, but I appreciate the work of President Trump, the administration, and our international partners to reach this point."
Representative Eli Crane also recognized the diplomatic achievement, commenting on the timing and effort: "President Trump got this peace deal done in the middle of dealing with the Schumer shutdown. Very impressive."
Karrin Taylor Robson praised Trump's efforts, congratulating him for “securing another historic peace deal that brings every hostage home and brings stability to the region!”
She continued by emphasizing that “this is what strong, America First leadership looks like.”
Officials indicated further negotiations would be necessary to address these questions, however, the agreement has received bipartisan acknowledgment.
The diplomatic efforts represent a collaborative approach involving the Trump administration, international partners, and elected officials working toward a resolution to the conflict.
