Charlie Kirk, the 31-year-old founder of conservative organization Turning Point USA, was assassinated on Wednesday during an event at Utah Valley University, which has increased tension in the House of Representatives.
The tragedy prompted an emotional scene Thursday on the House floor, where tensions between Republican and Democratic members flared during what was intended as a moment of remembrance.
Rising Tension
According to reports from Townhall, Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-Co.) requested a moment of prayer for Kirk during the House session. The request reportedly prompted audible objections from some Democratic members, with voices heard shouting "no."
Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R-Fl.) responded by shouting back at her Democratic colleagues: "Y'all caused this!"
The exchange quickly drew attention from Republican members.
Rep. Andy Biggs (R-Ariz.) later posted on the social media platform X: "Democrats refused to pause and pray for Charlie Kirk. When they show you who they are and what they stand for, believe them."
Official Response
The White House issued a brief statement on X, acknowledging that political leaders in Arizona have expressed their condolences following Kirk's death.
President Donald Trump announced Thursday that he plans to award Kirk the Presidential Medal of Freedom, though no date has been set for the ceremony yet.
Speaking at the Pentagon during remarks commemorating the September 11 attacks, Trump said: "Before we begin, let me express the horror and grief so many Americans at the heinous assassination of Charlie Kirk have felt. Charlie was a giant of his generation, a champion of liberty and an inspiration to millions and millions of people."
Regarding the planned ceremony, Trump added: "I can only guarantee you one thing: We will have a very big crowd, very, very big."
The investigation into Kirk's death remains ongoing.
