Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes is celebrating along with Tucson as the city celebrates its 250th anniversary on Wednesday.
Kris Mayes recently visited Tucson and was impressed by what she saw.
"On my last visit, I was inspired by the community's commitment to protecting our democracy and honored to meet with my Tucson [attorney general office] team.” She had stated. “Happy 250th to the oldest city in Arizona."
Tucson hit this significant milestone on August 20th, marking 250 years since it was first founded in 1775. That makes it the oldest city in all of Arizona.
Senator Mark Kelly also sent appreciation to the city. He and his wife, former Congresswoman Gabby Giffords, both reside in Tucson and speak out on issues regarding the city.
"Happy 250th, Tucson! [Gabby Giffords] and I feel lucky every day to call this city our home." Mark Kelly expressed.
Tucson has come a long way since 1775. It officially became a city in 1877, and three years later, the railroad arrived in 1880. That helped the city grow.
Today, Tucson is Arizona's second-largest city, with about 550,000 people living there, and the community continues to grow, as reported by Celebrate Tucson. It's also the central city in Pima County. The whole Tucson area is the 52nd largest metropolitan area in the entire United States.
What makes Tucson special is that it's one of the oldest places in North America where people have lived continuously, according to reports. That means people have been living there without interruption for hundreds of years.
During her visit, Mayes got to see how committed Tucson residents are to democratic values. She also met with staff from her office who work in the community.
As Tucson celebrates this anniversary, it's clear the city has successfully grown from a small frontier town into a major southwestern city while keeping its prosperous history alive.
