Abortion is on the ballot this November, and lawmakers again find themselves on opposite ends of the political discussion. In that conversation is the topic of the filibuster, which Democrats have suggested should be eliminated. Senatorial hopeful Kari Lake (R) is reiterating her support for the filibuster, noting that it encourages bipartisanship.
During an interview with Newsmax, Arizona senatorial candidate Lake derided Vice President Kamala Harris (D) and Arizona Rep. Ruben Gallego’s (D) support for eliminating the legislative filibuster to ensure federal abortion rights.
Outgoing Arizona Senator Kyrsten Sinema (I) similarly criticized the vice president’s stance on the issue, and senatorial candidate Lake praised the independent’s support for the filibuster.

“That’s what my opponent wants to do,” Lake said regarding Rep. Gallego and the filibuster. “He wants to get rid of the filibuster for each and every thing.”
The reason she provides for him allegedly wanting to get rid of the filibuster is because “he doesn’t want to work with others.” “It’s really important that we protect the filibuster. That is incredibly important,” Lake affirmed during the interview.

On the issue of abortion rights, Lake expressed that each state would decide their own abortion laws.
“The people of Arizona will make a choice and what laws our abortion laws are. It is not up to the federal government. It is not up to a federal official to decide that,” Lake explained.
When I get to the U.S. Senate, I will not vote for a federal ban on abortion. I will not vote for federal dollars to fund abortion. It’s up to the people here in Arizona to decide and in the other states as well. I trust the people to make that decision,” she added.
During an interview with Wisconsin Public Radio, Vice President Harris commented that the Senate should set aside the rule that requires 60 members to allow a vote that would reinstate federal protections that were overturned by the Supreme Court in 2022.
“I think we should eliminate the filibuster for Roe, and get us to the point where 51 votes would be what we need to actually put back in law the protections for reproductive freedom and for the ability of every person and every woman to make decisions about their own body and not have their government tell them what to do,” Vice President Harris said.
