Sinema Says Democrats Should Not Have Ended Judicial Filibuster in Senate After Trump Immunity Ruling

Congressional Democrats continue denouncing the Supreme Court's recent ruling that former President Donald Trump has immunity from prosecution for actions taken in an official capacity. This decision, which has sparked outrage towards SCOTUS, has raised serious concerns about the future of the judicial system. Senator Kyrsten Sinema (I-AZ) suggested that the end of the judicial filibuster can be blamed for this.

In a brief post on X (formerly Twitter), Sen. Sinema stated, "Maybe it wasn't a great idea to eliminate the judicial filibuster."

The Arizona Senator referred to the decision by the late Senator Harry Reid (D-NV) and a Democratic majority in 2013 to eliminate the process. Famously dubbed "the nuclear option," Sen. Reid and the Democrats eliminated the filibuster for a majority of appointments to the executive and judicial branches except for the Supreme Court.

In November of that year, then-Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) told Democrats, "You'll regret this, and you may regret this a lot sooner than you think."

Upon the election of Donald Trump in 2016 and with a Republican majority in the upper chamber again, Sen. McConnell fulfilled his warning by killing the filibuster for the Supreme Court nominees and lowering the threshold for confirmation from 60 votes to a simple majority of 51, paving the way for the appointments of Justices Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh, and Amy Coney Barrett.

Hence, the Supreme Court's 6-3 decision that Trump was immune from prosecution for actions within his constitutional authority as President, although Justice John Roberts clarified that the lower courts must determine what these actions are, and Trump can still be prosecuted for actions outside of office or for breaching his authority.

Many Democrats and liberals on X (formerly Twitter) claimed that should Trump be reelected, he would become a dictator. As a result, they also suggested that Biden could use his authority as President to officially remove Trump from the election, including using military force and canceling the upcoming election.

Representative Andy Biggs (R-AZ) mocked these suggestions, saying, "The Not So Tolerant Left is falling apart because of a rightly decided SCOTUS ruling. What happened to "defending our democracy?"
