Yassamin Ansari Celebrates Billion-Dollar Boondoggle Bill Becoming Law

Representative Yassamin Ansari (D-AZ) is celebrating the passage of her Billion-Dollar Boondoggle Act, her first bill to become law.

What the Bill Does and What She's Saying

Rep. Ansari's bill requires the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) to report annually to Congress on qualifying taxpayer-funded projects and detail changes to their scope, estimated costs, and projected completion dates, ensuring greater transparency and awareness of delays or cost overruns.

More specifically, the Billion-Dollar Boondoggle Act requires agencies to report when projects are more than five years behind schedule and/or $1 billion over budget.

"The American people deserve transparency and accountability for how their tax dollars are spent, especially as families struggle with the rising costs of everyday essentials," Rep. Ansari said through her press release. "While the level of corruption across the federal government right now is stunning and unprecedented, this is a truly longstanding, bipartisan issue. Taxpayers deserve this transparency. And now they'll have a great deal more."

Previous Financial Transparency Demands

The Arizona congresswoman previously demanded transparency on the reconstruction of the White House's East Wing into a new ballroom last October, writing, "The American people deserve full transparency regarding the substantial demolition, preparation, and construction at the White House during a government shutdown, particularly when it concerns alterations to one of our nation's most historically significant buildings."

Figuring out where federal dollars are actually going has gained prominence on both sides of the aisle with the return of President Donald Trump to office, as Representative Andy Biggs (R-AZ) recently backed the Medicaid Fraud Prevention Act, which requires states to conduct an annual Medicaid fraud risk assessment and identify the most apparent waste, fraud, and abuse vulnerabilities.

"For far too long, governments at every level have allowed a festering culture of fraud and waste of monumental proportions across the United States," Rep. Biggs stated, highlighting the ongoing controversy surrounding Arizona's delinquent Single Audit.
