Arizona Democratic Lawmakers Urge Trump to Regulate AI

Arizona lawmakers are raising concerns over the rapid development of artificial intelligence, warning that AI could eventually make decisions with potentially deadly consequences if not regulated. 

Sen. Ruben Gallego (AZ-D)  expressed concerns about unrestricted artificial intelligence development. According to Gallego, previous technology could not “make the decision to kill us.” 

Gallego appeared on CNN’s “State of the Union,” warning President Trump and fellow lawmakers of the potential dangers. 

“We’re hoping that some, you know, committee in the House or in the Senate is just going to come together with, you know, some staffers and put together the framework that’s going to go into place maybe three years from now. We don’t have that time,” he said. “Dr. Frankenstein is telling us, ‘The monster has escaped.  Help us stop this.’”

Additionally, Congresswoman Yaasamin Ansari (AZ-D) shared her concerns with AI’s rapid development in a recent post on X. 

“Regardless of where you stand on AI, its rapid development comes with risks we can’t afford to ignore,” Ansari wrote. “That’s why I’m urging President Trump to lead a global effort to set rules of the road for AI safety."

Ansari urged the administration to recognize the risks of AI development and attached Trump’s approval ratings regarding AI. According to a recent poll, 23% of Americans believe the Trump administration has handled artificial intelligence well, while 57% believe the issue has been handled poorly.  

She further discussed her concerns during a CNN broadcast, saying it is crucial for Congress to remain in session until lawmakers pass AI regulations.

“We are just at the beginning of the worst to come,” Ansari said. “This technology is advancing far more rapidly than any of us can wrap our minds around.”
