Andy Biggs Supports ASU’s Proposal to Establish American Defense Center

WASHINGTON — Rep. Andy Biggs (R-AZ) announced Wednesday his support for an Arizona State University Research Enterprise proposal to establish the Applied Research for Manufacturing Operational Readiness, or ARMOR, program in a letter co-signed by Rep. Eli Crane (R-AZ). 

The Arizona State University Research Enterprise has submitted an official proposal to establish the Applied Research for Manufacturing Operational Readiness Center. ARMOR would serve as an advanced defense manufacturing research and engineering hub in collaboration with the U.S. Army. 

According to the U.S. System for Award Management, the center would coordinate and perform research both internally and externally, working in alignment with U.S. Army and Department of War strategies.  

Chris Howard, ASU executive vice president and chief operating officer, said that the decision aligns with the University’s desire to be of service. 

“There is a need to take soldiers and ensure they’re getting the best, most cutting-edge learning that they can to be effective, and that’s where we step in,” he said. 

Arizona is uniquely positioned to host this capability, as the state is a national leader in defense manufacturing, as stated by Biggs and Crane’s letter. 

“Throughout my time in Congress, I have been pleased to support projects and initiatives that strengthen our national defense and help safeguard our citizens, freedoms, and interests.” Biggs wrote. “ASU is well positioned to lead this important effort, and I am hopeful the administration will select its proposal to establish the ARMOR Center here in Arizona.”

As of publication, the proposal awaits final approval from the federal administration and the Department of Defense.
