New Poll: Voters Want Washington to Let American Companies Compete in China

Arizona is now at the center of the chip manufacturing debate. TSMC committed an additional $100 billion to its Phoenix operations this week, bringing its total U.S. investment to $265 billion. The Phoenix mayor noted it was “the largest deal” in American history. The question now is whether Washington's China policy will help Arizona's chip industry win, or hand the market to competitors.

A new nationwide survey suggests voters already know the answer. The poll finds overwhelming, bipartisan support for updating U.S. policy to let American companies compete on equal footing in China, and the numbers have a direct message for Arizona's delegation.

Conducted June 16-18 by PUP Research (N=1,000 likely general election voters, MoE +/-3.1%), the poll finds that 74% of Americans support updating U.S. policy to ensure American companies can compete fairly in the Chinese market, with just 12% opposing it. Among conservatives, support hits 82% and Trump voters back it at 78%.

The survey also asked if American companies should be allowed to source chips from Chinese and Korean suppliers for products made and sold in China. This would help lower prices, ease pressure on domestic supply chains, and free up American-made chips for use at home. Fifty-six percent said yes while only 19% said no, a net of +37 with not a single demographic group opposing it.

U.S. policy is costing American companies market share in China without protecting anything at home. Chip restrictions have already wiped out Nvidia's AI chip market share in China. CEO Jensen Huang recently said it has fallen from roughly 95% to zero.

This polling points to a smarter path that many Americans already support. Letting U.S. companies source chips abroad for products made and sold in China relieves pressure on the supply chain and keeps more American-made chips available for products built and sold in Arizona.
