Senator Mark Kelly (D-AZ) introduced two bills this week aimed at getting more men into classrooms and mentorship roles, arguing that the shortage of male teachers and role models is having a serious impact on young men across the country.
The Educators for America Act and the Building Community in America Act would expand pathways for Americans to serve as teachers, mentors, and volunteers, with a particular focus on increasing male participation.
Kelly recently sat down with Univision Arizona to explain why he felt the moment demanded action.
The striking numbers hit when Kelly was growing up in New Jersey; roughly 35 percent of teachers were men. Today that figure has dropped to 23 percent, and Kelly says the consequences are real for boys who are growing up without male role models in the classroom or at home.
"A lot of young men are struggling. They're often isolated. They don't have role models," Kelly said. He recalled a conversation with a young Black man who told him that of all his friends growing up, only he and one other had their father present in their lives. "That's challenging for a lot of the young men across our country," Kelly said.
The stakes, he argued, go beyond classroom performance.
"When a mentor or a father figure leaves a young man's life, they are more likely to become incarcerated than to graduate from college," Kelly said. "It's a drastic change in their lives, and you can improve a young man's life by having somebody that they can talk to who's also a man."
He described the situation as a crisis that is still accelerating. Young men, he said, are falling behind in school, struggling to find direction, spending excessive time in isolation, and failing to build the kind of connections that lead to stable careers and healthy relationships.
For Kelly, the legislation is less about politics and more about catching up to a problem that has been building for years. "We're certainly not ahead of it," he said. "We're trying to catch up. We're trying to do something positive… and it's important for all of us."
