David Schweikert Talks Republican Strategy to Advance Agenda Ahead of Midterms

Representative David Schweikert (R-AZ) discussed what Republicans should do to advance President Donald Trump's agenda ahead of the midterms in a recent appearance on Fox Business's Mornings with Maria, saying that "sitting on our hands is unacceptable."

The Game Board

"There is an intense sense of frustration, but with that, there is also so many things on the President's agenda, the Republicans' agenda, I would say America's agenda, we could get through," Rep. Schweikert commented. "But you have to understand that the negotiating tactics for the SAVE [America] Act just do not do anything. [They] give the Democrats what they want, which is basically a combination of chaos and calcification; doing no work at all, and I am part of the group that actually believes that we should grab every good piece of legislation and throw it at the U.S. Senate and make them work, and within there, I define spots where we came move parts of the SAVE [America] Act so we can also protect our elections."

Nuke the Filibuster?

Substitute host Cheryl Casone asked Rep. Schweikert whether he believed the Senate should nuke the filibuster to advance the SAVE America Act, a move that Senator Ron Johnson (R-WI) suggested in an interview with her.

Sen. Johnson countered the argument that nuking the filibuster would hand Democrats a weapon when they retake the House, Senate, and White House by saying that when they do, they would nuke the filibuster anyway, and therefore, Republicans should do it while they can.

The Arizona congressman suggested that "for those of us in the House, I believe it is actually more chaotic for us not to do our work as a theory [or] strategy that we are going to somehow force the Senate and the Senate Democrats to play nice. We should be doing our work, grinding it out, trying to actually make America just the prosperous nation it has been and can be, and sitting on our hands is unacceptable."

As a result, Schweikert suggested putting the SAVE America Act into a reconciliation budget to circumvent the filibuster.
