Arizona Senate Republicans are mourning the loss of a Glendale firefighter who was killed while battling a wildfire near the Colorado-Utah border, calling his death a painful reminder of the dangers firefighters face every time they answer a call.
Nick Hutcherson, a 27-year-old assigned to the U.S. Forest Service's Kaibab National Forest, died on June 27 while responding to the Knowles Fire.
He was one of three firefighters killed in the incident, alongside Emily Barker of Clinton Township, Michigan, and Sydney Watson of Warrior, Alabama. Two other firefighters were injured.
Reports show that officials said the fire had grown rapidly after merging with several nearby blazes, eventually burning more than 28,000 acres.
The firefighters were caught in a burnover, a situation in which a fire cuts off all escape routes and forces crews to deploy emergency fire shelters. A serious accident investigation team is now reviewing what happened.
Senator Kevin Payne (R-AZ), who chairs the Senate Public Safety Committee, reflected on the courage it takes to do the job Hutcherson and his fellow firefighters did.
"There are few acts more selfless than running toward danger when everyone else is running away," Payne said. "They answered the call knowing the risks, driven by a commitment to protect others, no matter the cost."
Senate President Warren Petersen (R-AZ) echoed that sentiment, noting the timing of the tragedy as Arizona approaches the anniversary of the Yarnell Hill Fire, one of the deadliest wildfires in the state's history.
"Our hearts are also with the families of the two other firefighters who gave their lives battling this wildfire in Colorado," Petersen said. "Every alarm firefighters answer carries unimaginable risk."
Both lawmakers emphasized that the sacrifice made by Hutcherson and his colleagues reflects values they see as central to public service: courage, selflessness, and a willingness to protect others, including complete strangers, even at great personal risk.
As wildfire activity continues to intensify across the West, Arizona Republicans say the loss serves as a sobering reminder of what firefighters risk every time they respond to an emergency.
