Arizona Primary Is One Month Away and June 22 Is the Last Day to Register

The clock is ticking for Arizona voters as today, June 22, is the final day to register to vote in the state’s upcoming primary election, and for those already registered, mail-in ballots are headed out this week.

Arizona’s primary is set for July 21, with a packed ballot that includes races up and down the ticket.

The governor’s race and the secretary of state race are among the most closely watched. For the Republican candidates, Andy Biggs and David Schweikert are among those running for governor against Democratic Governor Katie Hobbs, who is seeking reelection.

While Democratic Secretary of State Adrian Fontes is also running for another term, Alexander Kolodin and Gina Swoboda are facing off in the secretary of state race.

Further elections to watch for: Congressional races are also heating up. In District 1, Joseph Chaplik, Thomas “Jay” Feely IV, and John Trobough are among the Republicans competing for their party’s nomination, alongside Democrats Marlene Galan-Woods, Rick McCartney, Amish Shah, and Jonathan Treble.

District 2 has a quieter Republican primary with Eli Crane running alone, while Jonathan Nez advances as the sole remaining Democrat after Eric Descheenie withdrew.

In District 5’s Republican race between Mark Lamb and Daniel Keenan, election night will show whether the controversy surrounding Lamb leading up to the race has been disproven. On the Democratic side, Brian Hualde, Chris James, and Elizabeth Lee are also prominent contenders in a race that could shape the district’s outcome.

Ways to Navigate The Primary

For voters navigating the process, the Arizona Secretary of State’s Office is pointing people toward a free tracking tool called BallotTrax.

“BallotTrax sends you a text when your ballot gets mailed to you, and then once you vote it and return it, when it’s received and when it’s counted,” said Calli Jones of the Secretary of State’s Office.

Jones described the service as the most reliable way for voters to track their ballot in real time, rather than wondering whether it had been received and counted.

A few key dates to keep on the calendar: July 10 is the last day to request a mail-in ballot. Voting centers and drop boxes will also be available on primary day, July 21.

Voters who still need to register can do so online through the Arizona Secretary of State’s website or in person at their county recorder’s office.
