Representative Yassamin Ansari (D-AZ) has introduced three bills to rein in Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) for alleged misconduct, claiming the agency is "terrorizing" communities.
The first, known as the Drain ICE Act, rescinds the $75 billion in funds the agency received in the "Big Beautiful Bill" passed last year by the Trump Administration.
Second, Rep Ansari introduced the Stop Inhumane Conditions in ICE Detention Act, which would require regular reporting of health and care conditions in immigration detention facilities.
The Stop Inhumane Conditions in ICE Detention Act is inspired by allegations Rep. Ansari received of poor-quality healthcare treatment for detainees of the Eloy Detention Center who faced severe illnesses, including chronic leukemia, a kidney infection, and coughing up blood.
Finally, the Arizona Congresswoman introduced the Studying Disastrous Impacts of Mass Deportation Act, which mandates a study on the supposed economic harm the Trump Administration's mass deportation agenda will cause.
"I've visited the Eloy Detention Center three times, and have witnessed firsthand the severe neglect and deteriorating health of the people being held there–including U.S. citizens, asylum seekers, DACA recipients, and green card holders," Ansari said in a press release. "I've also been on the ground in Arizona and watched ICE terrorize our communities—rolling into our neighborhoods fully geared and ready to deploy tear gas and other violent tools of repression. My legislative package is a significant step toward reining in ICE, holding this unchecked agency accountable, and draining the slush fund Republicans handed over in the Big Ugly Bill."
Ansari had previously said ICE was "beyond reform" after the fatal shooting of Renee Good, who had allegedly attempted to run over an agent with her car.
"There needs to be investigations about this immediately, and ICE needs to be reigned in; they are beyond reform, and this cannot go on any longer," she declared.
