Two People Shot by Border Patrol Agent in Portland Investigation

Portland, Ore. – A Federal Immigration and Customs (ICE) agent shot and injured two individuals in Portland, Oregon, on Thursday, according to authorities.

The shooting took place a day after an ICE agent shot and killed Renee Nicole Good, 37, a U.S. citizen, while in her car in Minneapolis.

Federal officials have additionally deemed the situation as an act of self-defense. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) stated that the incident occurred as Border Patrol agents were performing a “targeted” stop on a vehicle carrying two suspects linked to the Tren de Aragua gang.

In a written statement, the department described one of the passengers as "a Venezuelan illegal alien affiliated with the transnational Tren de Aragua prostitution ring” who had previously been involved in a recent shooting in Portland.

The statement suggests that when the officers identified themselves to the suspects, the driver attempted to run them over.

"Fearing for his life and safety, an agent fired a defensive shot," spokesperson for DHS, Tricia McLaughlin said.  "This situation is evolving, and more information is forthcoming,” she added.

In response, Portland Mayor Keith Wilson condemned the incident, calling it “deeply troubling,” and demanding ICE halt its operations within the city until a full investigation is completed.

“I call on every Portlander to represent our values and to show up with calm and purpose during this difficult time. Portland does not respond to violence with violence. We respond with clarity, unity, and a commitment to justice,” he expressed.

"We stand united as elected officials in saying that we cannot sit by while constitutional protections erode and bloodshed mounts,” Wilson said in a joint statement with the Portland City Council. "Portland is not a 'training ground' for militarized agents, and the 'full force' threatened by the administration has deadly consequences."

Additionally, the FBI Portland Office has announced it is investigating “an assault on federal officers” involving two Customs and Border Protection officers. Two individuals who “fled the scene immediately following the shooting” are receiving treatment for their injuries, the bureau stated.
