State Representative Alma Hernandez: I visited with T, whose family members were detained near my home just two days ago. While I was there, I was able to bring her groceries and money to help cover expenses for the week because I know she needs support during this incredibly overwhelming moment. During my visit, she received a call from her sister-in-law, and we learned that her family is being held at the Eloy Detention Center. They still don’t know why they are there. Officers attempted to pressure them into signing deportation papers, falsely telling them they were not allowed to be in the country. It is devastating to know they are being lied to and manipulated into signing these documents thankfully they refused because they have documents to prove they are currently in their Asylum process. Her mother, who is currently in Venezuela, FaceTimed her while I was there, and I was able to speak with her as well. The fear, confusion, and heartbreak this family is experiencing is unimaginable. Families like hers are being cruelly targeted by ICE, and once the cameras leave, they are left completely alone without support, resources, or guidance, and with no idea where to turn. Since the moment T and I spoke on Friday, I have been working nonstop to help her find legal counsel. Pro bono support has been incredibly difficult to secure, but thankfully, a friend I went to high school with is making sure her family is included on his team’s list. T wants the world to know their story to know that they are not criminals. They were doing everything the right way, and yet they were still swept up and torn apart. These stories are heartbreaking, and we cannot look away or pretend this isn’t happening in our own community. I am on a mission to find her temp housing as she can no longer afford her month to month apartment if you can help, please reach out! We must do better
