Andy Biggs Cracks Down on Illegal Aliens Obtaining Commercial Driver's Licenses

Representative Andy Biggs (R-AZ) is introducing legislation to crack down on illegal aliens obtaining commercial driver's licenses.

In a post to X, Rep. Biggs wrote, "I introduced the VERIFY CDL Act to ensure that only those legally allowed to work in the U.S. can obtain a CDL. We've seen tragedies caused by illegal aliens behind the wheel of commercial vehicles, and one preventable death is too many."

The Blaze provides additional details about the bill, which would require an applicant's employment for a trucking company to be subject to the E-Verify system before they can receive a CDL.

"Operating a commercial vehicle is not a right — it is a serious responsibility," Rep. Biggs said in additional comments to The Blaze. "When states issue CDLs without verifying work authorization, they gamble with American lives. My bill puts an end to that recklessness. If you are legally authorized to work in the United States, E-Verify confirms it. If you are not, you do not get behind the wheel of a 40-ton vehicle."

A high-profile case of an illegal alien operating a commercial truck occurred in Florida this past August, wherein Harjinder Singh, an illegal alien from India, is accused of jackknifing his truck and allegedly killing three people in Port Saint Lucie.

When questioned by police, Singh could not speak English meaningfully and correctly identified only two of four road signs. Further investigation found that, despite failing the written CDL exam 10 times, Singh was able to obtain a commercial driver's license in California.

Consequently, Representative Byron Donalds (R-FL) introduced the Weigh Station Enforcement to Intercept and Guard Highways (WEIGH) Act in September, which requires all weigh stations along interstate highways to review the commercial drivers' licenses of truckers for irregularities and ensure they are proficient in English.

"Safety must be the standard, not the exception, and on Capitol Hill, I'm fighting to ensure that the American people are put first every step of the way. The elimination of these threats to the American people is non-negotiable," Rep. Donalds said in a statement.
