Insurance Healthcare Bill Passes, Yassamin Ansari Denounces Arizona Republicans

The House of Representatives voted 230-196 to extend Affordable Care Act (ACA) subsidies for three years. During the debate, Representative Yassamin Ansari (D-AZ) criticized Arizona's Republican delegation for opposing the extension.

"Despite 17 Republicans standing up to Donald Trump and to their own leadership, I want to point out that not a single Republican from Arizona's delegation chose to put their constituents first and extend these life-saving subsidies. That is egregious, and that is unacceptable," Ansari said.

Representatives Andy Biggs (R-AZ) and David Schweikert (R-AZ) voted against the reform.

The congresswoman contrasted the U.S. healthcare system with those in the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and Japan, countries that have universal healthcare funded through taxes or mandatory social insurance.

"We are the richest country in the world, and we pay more for healthcare per person than any other developed nation," she argued, adding that despite spending double what other developed nations spend per person, the U.S. is not the healthiest.

The United States currently ranks 48th in the world for life expectancy. "It's time to take real action for Arizona and for people all across the United States. That means Medicare for All before more Americans lose their healthcare or go into medical debt," Ansari stated.

Without congressional approval and President Donald Trump's signature, approximately 20 million Americans could face higher health insurance premiums in 2026.

Senate Opposition

However, the bill faces an uncertain future in the Senate. Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) has indicated there's "no appetite" for an extension.

This follows the debate over healthcare subsidies that has intensified since the 43-day government shutdown caused by partisan disagreements over healthcare extensions.

“Let’s be clear, extending these tax credits is necessary, but it’s certainly not enough. We need to pass Medicare for all,” Ansari argued.

Since the subsidies expired at the start of this year, Arizona has seen significant ACA premium increases ranging from 2.5% to over 50% for marketplace plans.

The state's healthcare landscape now includes new options such as expanded Catastrophic plans, a type of health insurance under the ACA that protects people from extremely high medical costs in emergencies, and Health Savings Accounts.

At the federal level, changes include Medicare drug cost caps and a new income-based special enrollment rule.

The bipartisan debate continues as Democrats push for the subsidies while GOP leaders signal limited support for the measure. The bill now moves to the Senate, where passage appears unlikely.

“There is still so much more work to do, even after today’s passage in the House. We must apply pressure to the United States Senate to pass a clean three-year extension of these ACA tax credits, and Arizona cannot afford any more delays,” the congresswoman concluded.
