House Democrats to Trump: Urgent Call to Fire Noem

House Democratic leaders threatened to commence impeachment proceedings against Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem if President Donald Trump does not fire her first, indicating a pivotal shift in how party leadership is tackling the Trump administration’s immigration operations.

Concurrently, eight Democrats have signed on to an impeachment resolution against Secretary Noem amid the second killing of a Minneapolis resident by an immigration officer, which adds the total number of co-sponsors to 120, according to a spokesperson for the office of Democratic Rep. Robin Kelly of Illinois.

“Kristi Noem should be fired immediately, or we will commence impeachment proceedings in the House of Representatives,” House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, Democratic Whip Katherine Clark, and Democratic Caucus Chair Pete Aguilar said in a statement.

“The violence unleashed on the American people by the Department of Homeland Security must end forthwith,” the statement further states.

“We can do this the easy way or the hard way.”

On Jan. 14, Rep. Kelly launched an impeachment resolution following the fatal shooting of Minneapolis activist Renee Nicole Good by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent. As of Jan. 20, the resolution gained 100 co-sponsors, with the number increasing in response to outcries over federal agents’ practices across Minnesota, as well as the fatal shooting of Minneapolis activist and Intensive Care Unit (ICU) nurse, Alex Pretti.

“IMPEACH KRISTI NOEM,” the Democratic Party wrote in a post via X.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., also joined the call for President Trump to remove Secretary Noem from her post, citing Noem’s statements about Pretti on the Senate floor.

“Kristi Noem is a liar, she’s vicious. She’s also incompetent. Donald Trump must fire her at once before another American is killed under her watch,” Schumer said.

President Trump responded while talking to reporters, assuring that Secretary Noem is doing “a very good job,” while also confirming that Secretary Noem is here to stay.
