Arizona State Representative Nick Kupper (R-AZ) is pushing Governor Katie Hobbs (D-AZ) and Attorney General Kris Mayes (D-AZ) to release information about the state's food assistance program to federal officials, warning that failure to do so could jeopardize funding.
The dispute involves data related to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). Earlier this week, U.S. Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins (R-TX) announced that states refusing to share SNAP information with the federal government could lose funding for the program.
The federal government says it needs this data to verify participant eligibility and prevent improper use of the program. Arizona is among several states where officials have declined to provide the requested information.
Governor Hobbs and Attorney General Mayes have resisted sharing the data. Mayes has filed legal action to block the transfer of information in previous months.
Representative Kupper argued that holding back this data could hurt families who actually need help, and politics shouldn't mess with programs that feed people.
"Families who follow the rules and rely on SNAP to get through the week should not be put at risk because the Governor and Attorney General are choosing political fights," Kupper stated. "The federal government has made the requirement clear. If Arizona refuses to comply, our state risks losing SNAP funding altogether."
He added that blocking data sharing "protects only those who are abusing the system, at the direct expense of the citizens who truly rely on it."
The disagreement reflects broader tensions between state and federal officials over data sharing and program oversight. Supporters of sharing the information argue it helps ensure benefits go to eligible recipients.
Those opposing the data transfer have raised concerns about privacy and federal overreach, though these specific arguments weren't detailed in Kupper's statement.
The outcome could affect thousands of Arizona households currently receiving SNAP benefits.
