Ruben Gallego Criticizes White House Ballroom Project During Government Shutdown

Senator Ruben Gallego raised concerns about the continuation of a White House renovation project during the federal government shutdown, questioning whether the administration's priorities align with addressing economic challenges facing Americans.

"He's focusing on the ballroom, he's focused on everything but he's not focused on what's happening right now," Gallego said on NBC News. "Inflation is still high, people can't buy what they need to buy, and energy is still high."

Gallego drew comparisons to historical leadership, suggesting the administration should prioritize economic issues over construction projects.

“This is Marie Antoinette talking about 'let them eat cake' while Americans are struggling right now,” he emphasized. “So what I would like to do is to focus on this to make sure that we could actually get costs down.”

Controversial Construction

Cactus Politics reported on an ongoing White House construction project that includes demolishing the East Wing to build a new ballroom. The work is funded through private donations and corporations despite the government shutdown affecting federal services.

The National Capital Planning Commission, which typically oversees such construction projects, is currently closed due to the shutdown, and congressional lawmakers have requested extensive documentation about the project.

Gallego stated his focus is on economic concerns affecting his constituents. "People could actually make a good standard of living right now, be able to pay what they need to survive, instead of him focusing on all these little projects, which won’t bring anything to help Americans," he said.

Senator Gallego's comments reflect the ongoing debate over government priorities during the shutdown, as federal services are affected while the construction project moves forward.
