Mark Kelly Questions Venezuela Military Strategy

Senator Mark Kelly has voiced concerns about the Trump administration's approach toward Venezuela, questioning whether increased military operations could escalate into a broader conflict.

"This administration and with Pete Hegseth as the head of the Department of Defense, they're doing things that forget about being outside the norms," Kelly said. "We're flying B-52s along the coast of Venezuela and talking about regime change."

Kelly referenced historical U.S. military interventions in Vietnam, Cuba, Iraq, and Afghanistan, expressing skepticism about the effectiveness of regime change strategies and concerns about risks to American service members.

Military Operations Expand

The U.S. has steadily increased its military presence in the Caribbean region following strikes against Venezuela-based drug cartels. According to The Floridian, the Trump administration appears to be moving closer to direct military action against the Nicolas Maduro regime.

Current deployments include naval vessels, Marine F-35 strike fighters, and U.S. Special Operations forces, representing an escalation beyond the drones and helicopters initially used against drug-running boats. President Trump has also authorized CIA operations inside Venezuela.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio has framed the operations as targeting "narcoterrorist organizations" rather than the Venezuelan government directly. 

He named groups like Tren de Aragua and Cartel de los Soles, stating they pose threats through drug trafficking, human trafficking, and regional destabilization. A New York grand jury has indicted Maduro and other officials on drug trafficking charges, with the U.S. offering a $50 million reward for Maduro.

Kelly's comments reflect a different perspective regarding how far U.S. military operations should go, especially since the deployment of advanced fighter jets and special forces suggests the mission may expand beyond simply fighting drug cartels.
