Governor Katie Hobbs has secured federal disaster relief for Gila County following devastating flooding that struck the area this past weekend. Her efforts for critical support for small businesses, non-profits, and residents have now paid off with the Small Business Administration's (SBA) approval of an emergency declaration.
An early fall storm hit over the area, creating 2-3 inches of rain across central Arizona. The towns of Miami and Globe experienced the worst of it, with rainfall rates exceeding 2 inches per hour triggering catastrophic flash flooding. Pinal Creek overflowed, and hail up to an inch in diameter caused significant damage to the historic mining towns.
Governor Hobbs traveled to Gila County on October 4 to tour the damage and assess recovery needs. That same day, she and Director Gabe Lavine of the Department of Emergency and Military Affairs formally requested the SBA's assistance. Their quick action proved effective because the declaration was approved shortly after.
"I'm grateful for the swift response from the Small Business Administration as we work to rebuild in Gila County," Governor Hobbs said in a statement. "Miami, Globe, and the surrounding areas have been devastated by flooding, and I am working to deliver every resource possible to help our communities recover."
Hobbs emphasized her commitment to the community's recovery, pledging to continue partnering with local leaders, federal officials, and Tribal partners.
She made clear that Gila County would not just rebuild, but "[build] back stronger than ever from this natural disaster."
Economic Toll
Key infrastructure remains compromised, limiting travel and emergency response. Small businesses have suffered direct property damage and significant revenue losses from forced closures. For historic mining towns dependent on tourism, the flooding has highlighted both immediate setbacks and long-term challenges.
With the SBA declaration now in place, eligible small businesses and Tribal Nations can access Economic Injury Disaster Loans to begin recovery efforts.
Governor Hobbs' mobilization of state resources and aggressive pursuit of federal assistance have provided Gila County with the lifeline needed to move forward.
