Abe Hamadeh Praises FBI Director Kash Patel for Uncovering Massive NBA Gambling Ring

Representative Abe Hamadeh (R-AZ) praised FBI Director Kash Patel for uncovering the massive National Basketball Association (NBA) gambling ring that has captured headlines this week. Hamadeh commented that "their efforts remind us that we must remain vigilant in fighting against corruption in all forms."

As ESPN describes, several NBA figures, including Portland Trailblazers coach Chauncey Billups, Cleveland Cavaliers assistant coach Damon Jones, and Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier, were involved in a scheme with La Cosa Nostra (the Mafia), wherein NBA insiders would provide non-public information to tilt illegal bets on at least seven basketball games between March 2023 and March 2024 in exchange for a flat fee or a portion of the gambling winnings.

Additionally, several players intentionally sat out games to improve gamblers' odds, and Billups has been indicted on separate charges related to mob-run underground poker games.

"Let's not mince words," said Director Patel, "this is the insider trading saga for the NBA, that's what this is."

Similarly, U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of New York Joseph Nocella, Jr., called the scandal "one of the most brazen sports corruption schemes since online sports betting became widely legalized in the United States."

Rep. Hamadeh called the scandal "extremely disquieting for a number of reasons," citing "the victims of these egregious crimes, and the damage done to the league and its beloved athletes, who are admired by so many Americans."

"I strongly condemn any and all behavior related to organized crime and fraud. Funding dangerous criminal activity, illegally profiting off rigged systems, and cheating our fellow Americans cannot be tolerated, and those who engaged in this illicit activity should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law," Rep. Hamadeh continued. "As the FBI remains focused on combating these despicable crimes, their efforts remind us that we must remain vigilant in fighting against corruption in all forms."
