The desert city of Scottsdale has officially earned bragging rights as Arizona's premier Fourth of July destination. WalletHub's comprehensive analysis of America's top 100 cities for Independence Day celebrations placed Scottsdale at an impressive 11th nationally and first in the Grand Canyon State.
The recognition didn't come easy. Scottsdale earned its 60.65 total score through a balanced performance across five critical categories: Fourth of July celebrations, affordability, weather forecast, safety and accessibility, and attractions and activities. While the city excelled in weather conditions (ranking 11th nationally) and maintained reasonable affordability (21st), it also offered solid attractions and activities (22nd place).
The competition within Arizona was strong. Tucson secured second place at 30th nationally, followed by Mesa (34th), Phoenix (43rd), Gilbert (58th), Chandler (66th), and Glendale (69th). Each city brought its own unique charm to the holiday celebration, but Scottsdale's winning combination of desert beauty, festive atmosphere, and practical amenities sealed the victory.
The Perfect Three-Day Weekend:
Arizona residents are gearing up for an extended Fourth of July celebration as the holiday falls on a Friday in 2025, creating a perfect three-day weekend for Independence Day festivities across the Grand Canyon State.
"Happy Fourth of July, Arizona! 🇺🇸 I'm incredibly proud to be an American and to celebrate the founding promises of this country: liberty, justice and freedom from tyranny," said Rep. Greg Stanton.
Metro Phoenix will host spectacular fireworks displays at multiple locations throughout the weekend. Popular viewing spots include Westgate in Glendale, Steele Indian School Park in Phoenix, and Tempe Town Lake, where fireworks will reflect off the water's surface.
Apache Junction offers a more intimate mountain setting, while Flagstaff presents a unique alternative with its massive nighttime drone show. Prescott combines tradition with spectacle through the World's Oldest Rodeo, featuring fireworks and parades.
Salt River Tubing continues its nearly 50-year tradition as Arizona's go-to Fourth of July weekend activity. The lazy float down the scenic river provides relief from desert heat while offering stunning natural scenery.
Arizona's lakes, including Lake Havasu, Saguaro Lake, and Patagonia Lake, offer additional water recreation opportunities. For families preferring controlled environments, metro Phoenix resort pools offer day passes, while new water parks like Rescue Oasis Park and Soak Station 309 in Surprise provide comprehensive family experiences.
Arizona's dining scene has gained national recognition, highlighted by chef Yotaka Martin's recent James Beard Award for Best Chef - Southwest. Her restaurant Lom Wong on Roosevelt Row represents the state's culinary evolution from intimate dinner parties to nationally acclaimed establishments.
Arizona's compact geography makes spontaneous day trips practical during the long weekend. The state's diverse landscapes—from desert wilderness to mountain retreats and historic mining towns—lie within easy driving distance of Phoenix, requiring no overnight stays.
The extended weekend format allows families to combine traditional Fourth of July celebrations with unique Arizona adventures, from urban exploration to natural escapes, creating memorable patriotic experiences across the diverse state landscape.
