National Patriotism Study: Arizona not as Patriotic as Most States

A new report from WalletHub reveals where Americans are showing the most pride in their country, and Arizona sits in the middle of the pack.

Arizona ranks 34th out of 50 in overall patriotism, with a total score of 44.42. The study evaluated patriotism based on two key factors: military engagement and civic engagement. Arizona performed better in military engagement, ranking 23rd, while its civic involvement came in at 32nd.

Other southwestern states show a wide range in patriotic activity. Nevada edged just ahead of Arizona at 32nd overall, scoring 44.93, thanks in part to a strong military ranking of 17. Civic engagement, however, remained low at 34.

New Mexico ranked 21st, with a high military engagement rank of 8 but a weaker civic participation rating at 28. California lagged behind most states at 40th overall, scoring just 39.65, with particularly low marks in civic engagement ranking 39th.

In contrast, Utah emerged as a regional leader in patriotic behavior, placing 12th overall with a score of 56.40. Despite a lower military engagement ranking being 35th, Utah’s strong civic involvement, ranked 9th, boosted its standing significantly.

WalletHub analyzed 13 different indicators to assess patriotism, including military enlistment rates, veteran population, voter turnout in recent elections, volunteerism, and participation in civic organizations. Each factor was scored on a 100-point scale and weighted according to importance.

The study aimed to highlight states whose residents are actively contributing to the country through service, civic duty, and community involvement.

“The most patriotic states have a lot of residents who serve or have served in the armed forces, high voter turnout during elections, and a high share of the population volunteering with national or local organizations,” said WalletHub analyst Chip Lupo. “Patriotism also isn’t concentrated in any one particular area—the top states are located in vastly different geographic regions.”

As the nation grapples with issues like inflation and ongoing violence, WalletHub notes that patriotism isn’t just about waving a flag, it’s about showing up for your fellow Americans. Volunteering, voting, and serving in the military remain powerful symbols of national pride.
