Representative Abe Hamadeh (R-AZ) has introduced a bill that would codify President Donald Trump's executive order concerning election integrity into law.
In late March, President Trump issued Executive Order 14248, titled "Preserving and Protecting the Integrity of American Elections. " This order establishes various measures to clean up voter rolls, prevent fraud, and restrict mail-in voting.
For instance, the Election Assistance Commission will require more rigorous proof of citizenship in voter registration forms, chiefly government-issued IDs. Similarly, the State and Homeland Security Departments and Social Security must allow states to access Federal databases to verify the eligibility of people registering to vote.
Other measures include setting a single Election Day deadline to tabulate ballots. Any states that do not comply with these measures will have their federal funding withdrawn.
Rep. Hamadeh's H.R. 2499 would codify these provisions into law.
"In Arizona, we have seen what the mismanagement of voter rolls, failed election infrastructure, and corrupt courts can do to destroy voter confidence and faith in our system overall," said Rep. Hamadeh in his press release, adding, "We are taking swift action to rebuild citizens' trust in our elections through comprehensive and meaningful election integrity legislation."
Representative Claudia Tenney (R-NY), the bill's cosponsor, said, "As Chair of the Election Integrity Caucus, I am thrilled to see President Trump sign an Executive Order aimed at securing our elections and restoring confidence in our democratic process."
"This Executive Order removes illegal immigrants from voter rolls, mandates proof of citizenship for voter registration, and revokes the Biden administration's unconstitutional Executive Order 14019," Rep. Tenney continued, further noting, "It is crucial that President Trump's EO be codified into law to ensure its full effect. President Trump and the Election Integrity Caucus are committed to ensuring our elections remain free, fair, and secure."
At the beginning of March, Hamadeh introduced legislation mandating that Federal election ballots be printed solely in English, saying, "Federal elections should be conducted in English—clear, consistent, and without exceptions."
