Gosar Calls Bipartisan Border Deal 'Worst Bill in a Decade'

Representative Paul Gosar (R-AZ) did not mince words in an extended statement on the bipartisan border deal released by the Senate, calling it " complete rubbish" and "the worst bill in Congress in a decade."

"Not only does it not close the southern border, but it makes it worse by permitting 5,000 illegal aliens to cross the border each day, greenlighting more than 1.85 million more lawbreakers into the United States annually [emphasis his]," said Rep. Gosar, adding that it would provide these 1.85 million migrants would become eligible for citizenship, referencing a recent statement by Senator Chris Murphy (D-CT) that "the border never fully closes."

Additionally, he pointed out that the bipartisan border deal contains far more money for foreign aid ($60 billion for Ukraine, for instance) than it does for the US border, which Gosar described as "a paltry $620 million to maintain the border wall. Meanwhile, the areas of the border that are still wide open will remain wide open."

Moreover, Gosar blasted Senator James Lankford (R-OK), one of the bill's chief architects, for justifying the bill as improving "weak" immigration laws.

"Anyone claiming our immigration system is "broken" or "weak" is taking you for a fool," the Arizona Congressman scolded, countering that "The problem is not the law. The problem is illegal aliens breaking the law, the current administration not enforcing the law and then our immigration enforcement agencies walking away and not deporting these criminals."

" I cannot in good conscience support this garbage, no lawmaker should. This is the worst bill in Congress in a decade and that is saying a lot," Gosar concluded.

Gosar's colleague Representative Andy Biggs (R-AZ) similarly blasted the bill as "the worst idea on border “security”— EVER," and "even more terrible than the old Gang of Eight legislation."

Other Republicans have savaged the bill, including Representative Byron Donalds (R-FL), who called it "trash," and Representative Carlos Gimenez (R-FL), who said it was pointless because the White House can secure the border through executive action.

However, some Democrats have interpreted the GOP's resistance as a means of allowing former President Donald Trump to campaign on the issue and blame President Biden for the border crisis. Representative Veronica Escobar (D-TX) said, "Trump wants to keep a broken immigration system, our stock market to crash, and claims that a terrorist attack on our country is ‘100% certain.’ It's on par with Trump's brand of xenophobia and fear-mongering to whip up his base."
