Established in the 1940s, the Lukeville Port of Entry has been abruptly been shutdown as are result of a massive influx of illegal immigration. The fallout is believed to have caused major inconveniences to travelers, and may even lead to unnecessary deaths.
Last week, the US government announced the closure of the Lukeville Port of Entry until further notice so the state could concentrate on battling illegal immigration along the Southern Border. However, many Americans who reside in border towns make commutes between places like Ajo, Arizona, and Sonoyta, Mexico, majorly altering plans or stranding Americans over borders.
Governor Katie Hobbs (D-AZ) condemned the situation, stating, "This is a bad decision that impacts our border security. It hurts our economy because it’s a putting a damper on trade and tourism."
US Rep. Paul Gosar (R-AZ) penned a letter to Chief Patrol Agent John R. Modlin of Tucson, AZ and U.S. Customs and Border Protection Commissioner Troy Miller to lobby the federal government to reverse their decision, as well as criticizing the seemingly impulsive decision made in Washington.
"It is clear that you have prioritized illegal aliens over U.S. citizens," wrote Gosar. "In an effort to coddle, welcome, and process hordes of illegal aliens (as opposed to simply blocking their access and preventing them from walking into Arizona - as you are paid to do and as you swore to do) you have decided to roll out the welcome wagon for transparently fake 'asylum seekers' who are in fact simply seeking jobs and social welfare benefits in this country."
Rep. Gosar pointed out that the new route that was proposed by the federal government would feature a detour of around 200 miles away from Lukeville. The Mexican government stated in response to these proposals that they have "security" issues.
In the letter, Gosar praised Border Patrol agents' efforts to maintain border security and emphatically condemned the government's inability to effectively communicate the closure of the port.
